What to know about La Palma?

La Palma is known as the beautiful island because of its incredible landscapes, volcanoes, deep forests, several beaches and star-filled night skies. In Spanish the island is called "Isla de la Palma," and is usually abbreviated to "La Palma," which means the Island of Palms or Palm Island. La Palma is nicknamed "Isla Bonita" ("beautiful island").

In 2002 UNESCO declared the whole island of La Palma a World Biosphere Reserve. The total population is about 86,000 of which 18,000 (2003 data) live in the capital, Santa Cruz de la Palma.

Interesting fact: "The western flank of the Cumbre Vieja volcano would slide down westwards into the Atlantic ocean. There would be very strong earthquakes across La Palma while the flank was sliding. As the flank slid into the sea, it would create a very large wave called a mega-tsunami. This wave would move rapidly westwards.

Most of the energy of the wave would head straight out across the Atlantic towards the United States, Bahamas and the Caribbean, but a smaller wave or waves would head in other directions too. All these waves would get smaller as they cross the Atlantic. However scientists believe that they could still be as much as 50 metres high, for example, when they reach the east coast of the United States." What did I like most about the island?

  • Caldera de Taburiente National Park: a park in a mountain crater, with hiking trails, 2000m peaks, waterfalls & Canary pine trees

  • the bending roads on the wild mountain chains with the tree crowns reaching high above us

  • flea market in Puntagorda

  • bio, organic little shops with daily fresh produce

  • volcano trip @Fuencaliente in the south of the island

  • long walks in the pine forest

  • staring at the stars at night in the sky (I spotted 2 shooting stars first time in my life!)

CALDERA DE TABURIENTE NATIONAL PARK

This is the map of the volcano crater (caldera) I hiked which took comfortably 6 hours from start to finish line. Caldera translates to 'boiler' in English. There are several different paths to discover in the 'boiler'. I went for the most popular one that led me to the Colourful Waterfall. See photos below.

CASCADE DE COLORES (COLOURFUL WATERFALL) INSIDE TABURIENTE NATIONAL PARK

FUENCALIENTE

I randomly hopped on a bus and asked the driver to take me to the final stop. On my way, I asked the universe to "Take me to a place where I feel special. Somewhere unique which gives me a new experience." I was taken to Fuencaliente where the volcano craters are. Opposite the volcano center, there was a massive pine forest with over 15km hiking trail. The nearby village was simple and quiet with two cafes open, and in one of them I had a coffee with a sandwich then took the last bus back to my accommodation in the evening.

These volcanos are part of one of the most interesting landscapes on the island. They have erupted in 1677 and 1971 and have also experienced past activity that led to the development of the huge San Antonio crater, which is 3000 years old. It was indeed a special place! It felt powerful, pure, and gracious to be near and walk around the top of the crater. Certain parts of the ground were warmer and I felt the heat strongly in my knees and the inside of my thighs and much less under my feet.

MY ACCOMMODATIONS

I booked two accommodations with Airbnb: one was a hostel with wooden cabins and the other one was a camper van. My first wooden cabin accommodation high up in the mountain was extremely charming and wonderful for star gazing but due to complications with the place and my host's attitude I left earlier. The place was advertised with wifi but there was neither wifi nor phone reception here. My host took me to town in his car to buy some food and also offered to show me some places in the area. When I asked him if he wanted to share the cost of the petrol he said no and eventually at the end of our trip he made me pay €10 for petrol. My host also had some trouble with the police. He seemed very nervous and out of control when the police stopped him at the market we visited. My host's behaviour visibly changed after this incident, he turned worried and angry and drove me to his friend's place where I was waiting in the car for him for half an hour. I sensed something was not right and when he returned I asked him to take me back to the hostel and let's call it a day. Later that day the police turned up at the hostel and my host disappeared. I was sure that the police took him away abruptly because he left his cooking unfinished in the kitchen, he didn't leave a note for me (and remember there was no phone reception or wifi), and his car stayed on the premises. Because of my negative experience, I would not promote this place but I want to mention how amazing, quick, and helpful Airbnb's customer service team was in advising me in the situation. Huge thanks for them!

My other accommodation was a standing camper van parked in a German couple's house near Todoque. The couple sold everything in Germany and moved to La Palma many moons ago. They left their old ways of living in the city (both ran their own businesses) and chose a more peaceful, happier lifestyle which allowed them to re-connect to their passions and hobbies along with starting new business ventures on the island. I so loved their stories that inspired me to try something similar with my twin!

I loved the camper van SO SO much! I felt safe and cozy in this womb-like, seemingly tiny but in reality, spacious white cabin. My only doubt raised when the weather changed for very windy and thought I might be tossed over by the wind but then I thought there were so many people sleeping here in the past without any problems so I would just be fine. And I was. Watch the camper van inside the tour below.

BENTONITE CLAY CLEANSE

Bentonite clay, or in other words, “healing clay” is known to cleanse and detoxify the body. Many people enjoy bentonite clay benefits by taking it internally (drinking and/or eating it), on top of using it externally on the skin.

How Bentonite Clay Works?

We come into contact with a range of toxins numerous times every day, as toxins are given off from common products like paint, cleaning supplies, markers, substances used in building homes, low-quality un-purified water, and even pesticides that are widely sprayed regions that have farming present. It is quite common to inject a range of different toxins just by breathing in the fumes that are present all around us, not to mention the toxins that we receive from an unhealthy diet filled with low-quality processed foods.

BENTONITE CLAY = ASH MADE FROM VOLCANOS

“Heavy metal toxins” usually refer to substances like mercury, cadmium, lead, and benzene. These can be found in the products previously mentioned, and also in foods that contain high fructose corn syrup or certain types of fish. Bentonite clay benefits your body by helping to expel many of these toxins (thus as part of a heavy metal detox) and fight various pathogens responsible for the disease, such as E. coli.

On top of being able to draw-out toxins from the body, the clay itself has a range of nutrients and an abundance of minerals, including calcium, magnesium, silica, sodium, copper, iron, and potassium. When ingested into the body, either in a drink form or by eating the clay, its vitamins and minerals are absorbed similarly to how a supplement would be. Therefore, some people use it as a supplement since clay is a natural source of important dietary nutrients. www.draxe.com

Above is the type of clay I found in one of the local health stores so I gave it a "messy" go. I covered my whole body with it from hair to toes, waited for a little while then rinse it off. It is very easy to put the clay on and wash it off. It is not sticky or crumbly. As I didn't use up the package for my body I started to take the rest internally by swallowing a teaspoon clay mixed in water every evening before bed. Honestly drinking it is somewhat weird and I needed an extra cup of pure water afterward just to take the taste out of my mouth. Basically, this is mud. I was drinking mud! So you get the idea. My stomach took it well however when I drank it for an empty stomach (not eating for at least 6 hours before) it felt uncomfortable in my stomach. Nothing serious though.

Did I see or feel the healing result of drinking bentonite clay?

The first and most visible sign of the clay detox was that I developed many stubborn pimples under my chin on both sides. Having acne under the chin is commonly known to be connected with problems with the reproductive organs. Anyway, I kept drinking the clay daily until I finished the package which was about a month or a bit over a month...I don't remember now. Then I decided not to drink it again for a good while because it didn't taste good but because of its benefits, I would do it again.

The pimples didn't go away soon and after 3 months I still had them coming out. Now it's been 9 months after the clay detox treatment and I can see and feel with touch the gentle marks of these acnes under my chin. I have new ones turn up from time to time but the new ones are smaller and less red compared to those I had during the clay treatment. I also noticed that I stopped wanting to drink coffee during the clay intake and I could go to the toilet much easier in the mornings than what I considered to be normal for me before.

LA PALMA - "creation or destruction" since "from here we can take the forces to regenerate our being" and "heal the emotions and strengthen our will to generate new realities" @Project Harwitum

My spiritual experience

Definitely destruction:

The energies on La Palma are so totally different from what I experienced on El Hierro. Mostly the people's grumpy energy came through strongly rather than the island's healing energy but I did have a healing experience and I did meet some lovely, helpful people too! I can't tell if it was just me attracting these types of people who only help and smile if I pay or most of them really lacking genuine interest in caring about their services. I felt as if I was a mistake being a tourist here. The island otherwise is absolutely stunning and exciting to discover! Amazing opportunities for hikers and nature lovers who enjoy heights, pine trees, and volcanos!

I had a massage 👏 on the island for €35 in which my therapist felt my twin's energy in my body that I only know because she described my twin's character after the treatment which hit me by surprise. I heard that twin's energies cross pass into each other's body and as my twin keeps a lot within him (especially negativity like anger and hurt) it is possible that these feelings manifested in my body as my health has turned drastically worse since I've met him. I am still not sure where this connection would lead but it makes sense if I healed a lot of my issues, there would be space for his "crap" in my body. It's dumped on the feminine to heal it for the masculine.

Okay so...

I say goodbye with Cascade de Colores the magical waterfall for which I hiked and climbed hours of highs and lows inside the national park just to be able to see it:

Thank you for reading!

The next island will be La Gomera - Solar Plexus.
